Dave is one of our members
, here is his story:
When
I
was
about
eight,
I
was
given
a
pre
war
portable
grammophone
and
a
couple
of
dozen
1930's
dance
records.
The
scout
group
I
later
joined
used
to
run
jumble
sales,
and
I
used
to
buy
the
78's
that
were
left
over
at
the
end
of
the
sale
Genre
was
of
no
importance.
When
I
was
about
14
I
started
to
take
note
of
the
music
of
the
day.
My
father
was
a
fine
baritoine,
and
mother
played
piano.
My
first
(purchased)
record
was
Donegan's
Rock
Island
Line,
but
by
then
I
already
had
developewd
a
wide
musical
taste,
and
was
becoming
interested
in
the
history
of
recorded
music.
As
soon
as
I
could
afford
it,
I
started
to
explore
everything
from
the
Classics,
through
all
forms
of
jazz,
blues,
folk
and
popular
music.
My
current
record
collection
contains
about
500
78s,
the
oldest
of
which
dates
from1907
(I
researched
it),
about
800
x
45rpm
discs,
about
150
long
playing
33
rpm,
and
excactly
425
CDs.
Classics
range
from
Albinoni
to
Terterian,
folk
from
traditional
English
and
African,
to
modern
such
as
'Flook',
Rock
from
early
Haley,
to
21st
century
bands
like
the
Jim
Jones
Revue
Jazz
and
blues
are
probably
my
first
loves
these
days,
but
again,
I'm
talking
ancient
to
modern.
I
also
own
a
classical
Indian
Raga
but
with
very
exceptions
i’m
not
keen
on
grand
opera nor music from the shows.
I share my interest by running a Jazz appreciation group in Verwood u3a
